How this one works
The gap nobody funds
Kids in our districts get a reliable meal for about 190 days a year. The other 175 are the problem, and the long December-to-January break is the worst of it — it lands in the lean season, before the harvest, when household stocks are lowest. Weight gained during term is routinely lost over the break.
What a ration is
A sack of maize flour, a smaller sack of beans, cooking oil and salt: roughly six weeks of supplement for a household of five. It's not a full food supply and we don't pretend it is. It's the margin that stops a family selling an asset or pulling a child out of school to work.
Who gets one
Households flagged by the school committee, weighted toward families with a child already in malnutrition treatment, child-headed households, and families who lost a harvest. Rations go to the household, not to the child, so no kid is singled out in front of their class.
What we watch
Mid-upper-arm circumference measured on the last day of term and the first day back. Where rations went out, the average loss over the break is close to zero. Where they didn't, it isn't.
