Take-home rations

The December break used to undo the whole term.

In the holidays there was nothing. I would come back to school smaller than when I left.
Neema, 13 — Kitui County, Kenya

Before

Neema gained weight steadily through each term and lost most of it over the long December-to-January break, which lands squarely in the lean season before the harvest. Her measurements at the start of each year were consistently below where she'd finished the last.

What changed

Her household started receiving a take-home ration at the end of each term: maize flour, beans, oil and salt, roughly six weeks of supplement for five people. It goes to the household, not to her, so she isn't singled out in front of her class.

Since

Her mid-upper-arm circumference held steady across the last two breaks instead of dropping. She's in her final year of primary and wants to train as a clinical officer, which she says is because the one who visits her school 'knows what's wrong before you finish saying it'.
